Your Hosts
Camp founders, Ron Schara and John Hauer, have been turkey hunting addicts together for more than three decades. Their enthusiasm for the wild turkey led to the creation of Turkey Track Club.
Ron Schara
Ron Schara, along with Raven the Black Lab, is host of Minnesota bound, an Emmy-award-winning regional television show in the Twin Cities. He also hosts Backroads with Ron and Raven on the Versus Network. He is the voice and host of Pheasants Forever Television as well as Legends of Rod and Reel on the Outdoor channel, and stars in The Outdoor Beat on ESPN2. Ron has shared his tales with the Minneapolis based Star Tribune for over 30 years. Ron’s voice can also be heard on the minneapolis based WCCO radio programs where he is the host of two outdoor related radio programs. Ron is a co-founder of Turkey Track Club and is also the President.John Hauer
John Hauer, co-founder and a former Rapid City college president, a mule riding aficionado, a coveted author of the book The Natural Superiority of Mules, and the club’s chief guide. Hauer has a passion for all wildlife, but though he has hunted game from the U.S. to Africa, he still regards wild turkeys as one of his favorite game animals. He is shown here with the results of a successful guided hunt!
A Message From John:
Good Food: At least four times every day. Lots of stories and good old fashioned fellowship. One of the oldest, most experienced turkey hunting camps anywhere. Now in our 35th year, and access to thousands of acres of private and public lands.
Our camps have been written about in numerous publications nationwide, and guided the likes of many great hunters on their television shows. Here are a few publications to name a few: Sporting Classics, Wild Turkey Review, Sports Afield, SD Conservation Digest, Turkey Call, Turkey and T. Hunter and Lake and Trail. Watch for us on Television this year!
We can give dozens of references from well known turkey hunters like Michael Waddell, Rob Keck, Carl Brown, Ben Rogers Lee, Dave Streb, Gary West, Ray Eye, Pat Hemingway, James Earl Kennamer and Harvey Rattey.
Outdoor writers who have hunted at our camp include Tom McIntyre, Ron Spomer, Jerome Robinson, Mike Pearce, Gary Clancy, Jeff Murray, Steve Johnson, Dick Willis, Judd Cooney, Dennis Anderson, Mark Kayser, Wade Bourne and Bob Schrank. Click Here to read an article about our camp.
We co-sponsor the Black Hills Invitational Hunt with SD Chapter, NWTF. We are members of the South Dakota Guides Association, The National Wild Turkey Federation, Black Hills Sportsmen’s Association (Founder), NRA, National Wildlife Association, Worldwide Outfitters and Guides Association, and a host of others.
We specialize in guided hunts and are glad to provide calling and hunting instruction if desired. Hunters may do their own calling or assist with calling if they desire. The area we hunt is beautiful ponderosa pine forest with some oak and open meadows. Classic Merriam’s Turkey habitat.
The hunt can be as tough and strenuous, or easy as you wish. Like most places, our weather is unpredictable but April and May in the Black Hills are our favorite times of the year. We usually have warm, sunny days with cool, crisp nights. But don’t be surprised to see snow on the ground once in a while. Many of our hunters return to the Black Hills to vacation with their families. There is a lot to do and see.
I hope you will join us for a hunt.
John Hauer
